Review: Gomez shows she has the talent to match her celebrity

When pop princess Selena Gomez made her entrance Friday night, the sold-out Rogers Arena filled with screams of devotion not heard since her hair-flipping boyfriend Justin Bieber visited the stage last November.

The crowd was young enough to make a teenager feel out of place.

Lucky for Gomez, her voice and demeanour are not as grating as some of her ’90s-born pop contemporaries. She also has a refreshing live band backing her, which adds an element of genuine spectacle to an otherwise tightly rehearsed set.

Gomez’s vocal personality came alive during Love You Like a Love Song, which was accompanied by an edgy, wobble baseline.

Still maintaining her good-girl image, the starlet gushed about her love for Vancouver. Earlier in the day she tweeted: “Honestly I will move here one day.”

Unfortunately for the sea of glowstick-wielding fans, there was no appearance from her beau.

Draped in Cleopatra-style glitter and hardware, Gomez showed a surprising range of emotional authenticity. As her outfits switched from belly-baring hip-hop gear to sashed pageant gown, Gomez teetered on the edge of several flavours of pop.

During a nod to Nicki Minaj, Selena donned a cutesy swagger and rapped her way through part of Super Bass. After a dancer showcase, Gomez paid her respects to another starlet, Britney Spears with a six-song mini-set. Gomez belted out hooks from Spears hits (You Drive Me) Crazy and I’m A Slave 4 U. She even took a swing at Brit’s acidic new material.

It’s a long way to have come for a 19-year-old whose career began on the television show Barney & Friends. With a Kmart clothing line and fragrance on the way—on top of movies, TV and celeb-style philanthropy—a few short years have churned out an expensive, impressive production. It's the kind of powerhouse that might not have been possible even five years ago.

Opener Shawn Desman hearkened back to that other generation of MuchMusic mainstays (think early aughts) when garbled fan tweets had not yet taken over. “You may not know this song,” said Desman, “but your older sister does.”

Flanked by spaceman dancers, the R&B singer who sparked a trend with his sideways mohawk had a nostalgic but well-choreographed set.

With three albums under her belt, the most recent Selena material shows more traces of maturity. Instead of markety repetition intent on hooking children, songs off the album When the Sun Goes Down explore a perspective beyond boy-chasing.

Closing off with her early hit Naturally, Gomez showed off her pragmatic, good-girl attitude. “Stay in school, be nice to each other and don’t take no for an answer,” she said following her encore smash, Who Says. “Because you’re all beautiful.”

Making her mark! Selena Gomez shows off the sexy dance moves that won her talent judge spot

She has just won a spot as a judge on dance competition Make Your Mark.

And it was clear to see why, after the pretty starlet stunned fans with her sexy dance moves at a show in Vancouver last night.

The Wizards of Waverly Place star sparkled in her figure-hugging glittery dress



Selena, 19, showed off plenty of cleavage in a low-cut number that flattered her figure during the show, which was part of her debut headlining tour We Own The Night.

Her silky blue skirt gave fans a tantalising glimpse of her amazing legs, while she upped the glamour stakes even further with gold shoes.


And she gave her fans a thrill when she ran from one end of the stage to another in the outfit.

The fact she was able to dance and run around the stage in her high-heels was almost as impressive as the performance itself.







Earlier in her performance she showed off her perfectly flat stomach in glittering purple trousers and a high cut hooded top.

No doubt it was her dance floor prowess that persuaded Disney bosses to make their protege one of the judges on Make Your Mark.

Selena said: 'I have never judged anything, I’m kind of excited.'

However it seems it will be her throng of males fans that will be getting energised after rumours emerged she may be splitting up with her teen idol boyfriend Justin Bieber.

A source told ShowbizSpy.com she is “growing increasingly frustrated” with 17-year-old Bieber's behaviour.

The source said: 'Justin is still like a kid. All he wants to do is watch movies and play video games.

''Selena is very much a young woman. Most of the time they are apart because of work commitments.

'She wants to go out and have romantic dinners, but that’s not happening.'

It is sure to be a blow to the Baby star, as he has spoken about wanting to have children with the starlet.

Selena is announcing that she'll be hosting the 2011 MTV EMAs - Europe Music Awards - in Belfast in a special video announcement.
The show airs on MTV on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. ET. Look for performances by Coldplay, Jessie J, LMFAO, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Snow Patrol.
